Do’s and Don’ts of Social Media Policies

DO
What does a duck do? Wear a sailor suit with no pants if Walt Disney has anything to say about it. In this article it refers to the things that you should do on social media. It is your newest DO policy. Make doing them - your social media policy.

DON’T
Do not come onto your sisters friends, if her only friend is your dad. In this article it refers to things you should not do - ever. Make a DON’T policy on each item and make sure you go ahead and not do them.

DO
Create an online presence. Let the world know you exist, what you stand for and why. Fill in your bio sections on your social media. It helps the social media admin staff set you apart from accounts that are set up just to exploit the system.

DON’T
Spam your name and bio across the World Wide Web. Unless you have three arms, nobody will be that interested in you. You have to earn your reputation, not splatter it across the web in a sneeze guard manner at a pepper festival.

DO
Be consistent. If you are a cheese expert this week, then be one next week. Try not to be a superhero next week, or an expert in fossilized cheese.

DON’T
Plonk every iota of personal information on your Bio. You don’t want to make identity theft any easier than it already is. The Internet is a dangerous enough place as it is. I have already hacked your Paypal account, thanks to the cookie I installed and ran as you were reading this text.

DO
Google yourself, your business, your house and your partner. See how well or bad you look online. You could be in for a shock when you see that (according to the Internet) you are living with a gay geriatric male voice choir. You may need to update the Internet posts to be sure people know you can sing.

DON’T
Post on social media when you are drunk. You will break a rule and get your account suspended. You will be very surprised how easy it is. Even jokes about anything terrorist related will get you kicked off (yes, even if you put LOL after it).

DO
Give, give, and give. Not to charity….what is you? Made of money? Post and comment on other people’s posts and social media. It is called social media because you are supposed to be sociable. Try to be nice though, even if you have strong views on the subject.

DON’T
Get fired. In the UK it is legal to dismiss a person for posting harassing or insulting content on social media. No doubt similar laws are creeping into US states one by one.

DO
Adjust your privacy setting. There is no need for everybody on Facebook to see your sexy holiday snaps. Keep them for your best friends who can appreciate them with a cigar and a bottle of Chablis.

DON’T
Get kicked off. Nobody does, but check the rules for your social media before you try that “new” thing, because the only reason it may be new is that everyone else who has done it has been kicked off the social media platform.

DO
Promote yourself. Do it by giving advice and telling people why you are right. You can quote your qualifications, your work, experiences or just your opinion. Nevertheless you should promote yourself.

DON’T
Advertise. Social media is not there to make money. If you want to advertise then use the proper channels. They often have a banner-ad-sales platform with which you may add your ads. Don’t do it on via your personal posts because you will be kicked off the site.

DO
Plan. You are allowed to have a long-term social media plan. There are a few things you may use your social media for: research, find friends, find business contacts, gain good ideas, build your websites reputation, establish yourself as an expert, get a job, etc. Make a plan with your goal at the end. You need not spend hours online with your fingers crossed; because it won’t work, (you will find it harder to touch-type).
